Here's Why I Specialize In Skin

I've been at this whole nutrition thing for a while now, so you may have realized that I specialize in skin and women's hormones. Or maybe you had no idea, and now you kinda get why I talk about it so damn much. Either way, I've been meaning to tell you my story and why I'm so passionate about skin and healthy hormones.

Let's Go Back To The Beginning

I was a kid who really struggled with food, whether it was food allergies and digestion or worrying about if something I ate would make me sick. I've always had patches of eczema and just felt like food affected me more than other people.

Being a sickly little child I was on rounds and rounds of antibiotics for one thing or another. Knowing what we know now about how this affects our microbiome and overall health, I'm not surprised things turned out the way they did.

Sick And Tired Of Being Sick And Tired

When I was a teenager, I went on the Birth Control Pill without knowing anything about how it can affect hormone balance and digestion (go figure, my digestive symptoms got even worse).

My mental health also took a turn for the worse in my teenage years. Depression and anxiety ruled my life and I eventually went on an SSRI (anti-depressant medication). This isn't something I regret, but SSRI's absolutely have an effect on our nutritional health and, by proxy, our hormonal health as well.

I was also struggling with disordered eating and depriving myself of pretty much any nutritional food besides apples. (Hello, those 100 calorie packets, anyone?)

Flash forward to my young adult life and after a few years of "I can eat whatever I want and screw the consequences" and a super stressful school life, it's safe to say I was primed and ready for the cascade of hormonal imbalances I've experienced.

When It Rains It Pours

I never struggled with acne as a teenager, but as my 20's sunk in, I started noticing that I couldn't control the acne on my forehead and jawline. It became so debilitating and my self-esteem took a real nose dive. I've never felt more vulnerable or down on myself than when I was struggling with my skin. If you have health issues, they are usually hidden to the world, but when it's your skin, it's like your sensitivities are on display for all the world to see - and that's not fun for anyone.

This was also the first time I experienced symptoms of PMS. And let me tell you - that stuff ain't fun! I finally got what everyone else had been talking about for years, but didn't know this was a huge sign of hormonal imbalance.

The Straw That Broke The Camel's Back

I wasn't taking care of myself. I was burnt out and exhausted, and pushing myself harder and harder wasn't doing any good. It's no surprise that eventually and essentially, my body just gave out. I remember this day so well. I was working at my office and basically felt like I was going to die. A bit of an exaggeration, but ears were ringing, nausea and faintness wouldn't go away, I couldn't see (what?! yup, I essentially felt blind) and I really was on the verge of collapse. This went on for hours. I decided against going to the hospital but woke up the next day covered from head to toe in eczema.

I'd Hit Rock Bottom

So here I was, struggling with even more skin issues and feeling as awful on the inside as I felt on the outside. I realized I couldn't keep doing what I was doing. And then it all sort of clicked. I realized everything was connected - the medications as a kid, the 10 years on birth control, the skin issues after coming off the pill, my stress levels and digestion and food allergies and uncontrollable eczema. I knew I had gotten myself into this mess, and that I could absolutely get myself out.

Knowledge Is Power

So that's when I decided to go back to school for holistic nutrition. Looking back it makes total sense that I'd specialize in women's health - especially skin and hormones specifically. It was my story. It shaped me into the person I am today. And now it's my mission to help other women out there who might be struggling.

Remember, you are so much more than the package you come in. You are in control of your own skin health and together we can tackle all of your nutritional goals, one bite at a time!
